FIFA Denies Ireland’s Replay Effort

4:15 pm in International by jeff

It is official. Today, Ireland was denied by FIFA in their efforts to replay the match which sent France to the World Cup on a controversial hand ball by Thierry Henry. This was expected coming from FIFA, seeing that France was the ideal team to advance to the World Cup in their minds.

FIFA’s statement reads: “FIFA has today, 20 November 2009, replied to the request made by the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) to replay the 2010 FIFA World Cup play-off match held on 18 November 2009 between France and the Republic of Ireland in Paris. The result of the match cannot be changed and the match cannot be replayed. As is clearly mentioned in the Laws of the Game, during matches, decisions are taken by the referee and these decisions are final.”

Even Thierry Henry has come out and stated that a replay would be in everyone’s best interest. That is saying a lot for a player to come out and admit that he was wrong. He does still emphasize that it was truly an “instinctive reaction.” Henry has always been a classy player on the pitch throughout his illustrious career, and followed suit in this situation.

Ireland Asks FIFA For Replay

3:56 pm in International by jeff

Following their 2-1 controversial loss in World Cup qualifying to France, Ireland’s soccer federation is asking FIFA for a replay of the match. France qualified for the World Cup after a blunder of errors by the referees allowed France to go up 2-1 in the first overtime session.

irelandReplay of the goal clearly showed two French players in an offside position and as Thierry Henry attempted to trap the ball he clearly used his hand before crossing it into William Gallas to head home the winner.

Henry has since admitted to using his hand to trap the ball but said it was clearly out of instinct and not done intentionally. Even with Henry’s admission to the hand ball it will be almost impossible to replay the match.

In order to replay the match France would have to admit fault to the incident and agree to replay the match. This will surely not happen.

Back in 2005 FIFA did allow a replay in a World Cup Qualifier between Uzbekistan and Bahrain following a horrible mistake made by the referee. Ireland officials know it will be very hard to replay this match so they are insisting that replay be made available for the future if something like this happens again.

This incident is not going away anytime soon. The amount of time and effort given by these countries to qualify for the World Cup every four years is astronomical. Ireland was cheated out of a spot in the biggest stage in the world and we don’t see them going away without a fight.

U.S. Heroics Earn Late 2-2 Draw With Costa Rica

1:33 am in International by jeff

On Wednesday night the U.S. National Team played Costa Rica at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. Costa Rica was 30 seconds from clinching a spot in the 2010 World Cup, but before time could expire Jonathan Bornstein drove a header home to tie the game 2-2, to secure Honduras a spot instead.

The match began with the U.S. dictating the pace of play. They found themselves on goal numerous times in the opening 15 minutes, but just could not get the ball on goal.  In the 12th minute Connor Casey missed a golden opportunity to put the Americans ahead as Jozy Altidore found him wide open in front of goal with just the keeper to beat. Casey chocked big time and sent the ball high and wide of goal.

In the 20th minute Costa Rican forward Bryan Ruiz scored the games first goal. Ruiz blew by Onyewu after receiving the ball inside the box before beating a helpless Tim Howard. Ruiz would then score his second goal in 3 minutes to make the score 2-0, in the 23rd minute. He let loose a left footed rocket from the top of the 18 yard box into the upper left corner of the net.  The U.S. defense again was broken down by the crafty Ruiz.

The U.S. again would miss a sure goal when Landon Donovan found himself behind the Costa Rican defense in the 37th minute. Donovan found himself one-on-one against the Costa Rican goalkeeper, but his shot sailed into the stands. Donovan didn’t even get the ball on goal but to make it worse all he had to do was look to the back-post and he would have found a wide open Casey.

The U.S. should have had at least four goals in the first half.  They Absolutely dominated Costa Rica but went into halftime down two goals.

In the second half Costa Rica tried to preserve their two goal lead by dropping most of the team back and clogging the middle of the field. The Tico’s had their fare share of chances on goal but the U.S. still controlled the game, applying constant pressure to the Costa Rican back line. In the 64th minute Coach Bradley began to use his bench and in the next 16 minutes he used his three available substitutions.

In the 72nd minute Bradley got the fans back into the game when he outworked the Costa Rican defense for his 7th international goal. Second half substitution Robbie Rodgers sent a ball to the near post around the six yard box to Bradley, who flicked the ball to Donovan. Donovan settled the ball beautifully to his right foot and got a shot on goal that was deflected by Costa Rican keeper K Navas. Bradley pounced on the rebound and slid as he hit his shot off the keeper and into the back of the net.

With all three subs on the field, the U.S. was forced to play with 10 men for the last 15 minutes of the match when Unyewu went down with a torn tendon in his left knee.  This is not good news for U.S. soccer as it will prove very difficult to replace the big physical defender.

The U.S. would break the hearts of Costa Rica when Johnathan Bornstein found himself wide open on a corner kick before heading it past the diving defenders.  The corner was taken in the 5th minute of extra time culminating an excellent overall match.

To give up a goal this late in the match was heartbreaking for Costa Rica because now they are forced to play in a one game playoff to earn a berth to South Africa.

Overall, the U.S. looked strong at times.  Other than the two breakdowns from the U.S. defence in the first half the back four had a very strong match.  In the midfield Bradley and Donovan dominated up and down the pitch.  Up top, Altidore was a machine from whistle to whistle.  Altidore could have very well had a hat trick by himself on any other given night.

Behind the Scenes With The U.S. National Team

12:17 pm in International by jeff

Here are some great behind the scenes videos that ussoccer.com released to the public. The videos are from the USA’s 2-1 victory over El Salvador.

The first video shows how the the U.S. team prepares for each match.  Some things on this video that stood out  were the limited pre-game meal which includes pasta and chicken, and how skillful Clint Dempsey is.  Another great  feature of this is how Spector uses video to prepare for the man he is responsible for.

The second video goes through the highlights of the match and has some great parts including Bob Bradley’s speech at halftime.

Hopefully there are more videos like this to come.  We would love to see a behind the scenes with Landon Donovan or Jozy Altidore!

U.S. Gets Ready To Face El Salvador

12:20 pm in International by jeff

The U.S. National Team will face a tough test tomorrow night against El Salvador in 2010 World Cup Qualifying.  The U.S. is coming off a 2-1  loss to Mexico last month, in which they played terribly.  This is a must-win game for the U.S. on American soil.

Bob Bradley will certainly have to make a few key roster decisions before tomorrow’s match.  Oguchi Onyewu is suspended for the match due to yellow cards and Jay Demerit is nursing a groin injury.  With both starting center backs possibly out, Bradley will have to rely on some players to step up and make key contributions for the squad.

Our choice for the back four would be Carlos Bocanegra and Chad Marshall at center back with Johnathan Spector and Steve Cherundolo on the wings.  Marshall played very well for the U.S in the Gold Cup this past summer so this will be a great test to see if he is ready for the big stage.

In the midfield Bradley will most certainly go with Michael Bradley and Ricardo Clark in the middle with Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey on the wings.  The only change from these four would be Benny Feilhaber in Clark’s spot.  The U.S. has been lacking solid center midfield play so I can definitely see Bradley mixing this up.

Up top it should be Brian Ching and Charlie Davies getting the nod.  Jozy Altidore is not in game shape at the moment so we don’t see him starting the match.  Ching is coming off an awful match against Mexico so hopefully he can rebound.  The dream duo would be a Davies and Altidore combo.

Hopefully the U.S. can play at the level we saw in the Confederations Cup this summer.  Bradley is in for a tough test tomorrow night and we will see what happens!

Go USA!
