Tottenham,Arsenal, Birmingham, Everton, Fulham, Liverpool, West Ham United and Sunderland have come forward and banned the controversial vuvuzela horn for the upcoming season.

“Following discussions with the police and representatives from the local licensing authorities, the club will not be permitting vuvuzelas or similar instruments into White Hart Lane on match days,” Tottenham said. “We are concerned that the presence of the instruments within the stadium pose unnecessary risks to public safety.”

Most teams are coming forward and saying that the dreadful horns would cause safety concerns. I understand not being able to hear the PA announcer, but with all the talk about how flat out annoying they are had to have something to do with it.

This is great news to me! The ear throbbing sound that comes from a vuvuzela has no place in the stadiums. I would be thrilled if the entire EPL banned these horrendous instruments from stadiums. It is understandable for the horns to be in South Africa, but they shouldn’t be allowed anywhere else!

Chelsea will face off with Wigan and United will face Stoke City. For the cup to come down to the last match is great for all fans who follow the English Premier League. United will try to become the first club to win four straight league titles.

Chelsea hold the advantage but anything can happen at this level. Frank Lampard was quoted, “Obviously Manchester United have a tough game but we’ll never go that far (thinking we have already won). We have a big game next week. But we knew the Liverpool game was huge for us. We knew if we had dropped points we would have given the momentum to United.”

My favorite striker to watch Wayne Rooney was named PFA player of the year by his peers. Rooney has scored 34 goals this season for Manchester United. He has the respect of every player in the world only being 24 years old. He possesses an uncanny work ethic on and off the ball, who constantly is making full field runs. In my opinion, Rooney is one of the greatest goal scorers in the history of England football when healthy. The only downside I see in Rooney is his durability. I see Rooney being a tremendous force for England up top at the World Cup this summer. It could be a long night for the U.S. defense if he is firing on all cylinders.

Also, the Premier League team of the year selection drew one huge question mark for me. How does Frank Lampard not get on this list? Lampard, in my opinion should be considered for player of the year. He is a constant threat to goal coming out of the midfield for league leaders Chelsea.

Rooney was quoted, “It’s a great feeling to win because it’s voted for by the players. It’s a great honour and I’m really proud.” Please checkout more quotes and the full team lists over at the BBC’s coverage.Wayne Rooney Wins PFA player of the year.

The opening weekend of the English Premier League provided us with intriguing match-ups and some world class goals. For the most part, the favorites took care of business but there were a few upsets. Here at Livethepitch.com we believe this is still the greatest league in the world and look forward to watch this season play out.

The most lopsided score of the weekend was Arsenal defeating Everton 6-1. Arsenal comes into this season with a ton of doubters after losing their main goalscorer Adebayor to Manchester City. Fresc Fabregas absolutely dominated the match, and with his ability to take over in the midfield we look for Arsenal to surprise this season.

Defending champion, Manchester United, defeated Birmingham 1-0 with a goal from Wayne Rooney. Manchester United has high expectations for this years campaign but the loss of Cristiano Ronaldo is huge in my opinion. Sir Alex Ferguson has a lot to prove with this roster.

Chelsea and Hull City played the most entertaining match of the weekend. Hull City was seconds away from a huge point on the road until Didier Drogba found the back of the net. His second goal in the 92nd minute will prove to be one of the best goals of the year. Chelsea also has high expectations for this season with most of their superstars returning.

The biggest upset of the weekend came when Tottenham defeated Liverpool 2-1. Liverpool comes into this season with high expectations to compete for the title this season. Tottenham came out and showed they will be a squad to reckon with this season.

Here are the scores:

Manchester United 1-0 Birmingham City

Chelsea 2-1 Hull City

Everton 1-6 Arsenal

Stoke City 2-0 Burnley

Bolton 0-1 Sunderland

Aston Villa 0-2 Wigan Athletic

Blackburn 0-2 Manchester City

Wolverhampton 0-2 West Ham United

Portsmouth 0-1 Fulham

Tottenham 2-1 Liverpool

U.S. National Team striker Jozy Altidore is set to join Hull City of the English Premier League for the 2009/2010 season. Altidore is on loan for the season from Spanish giant Villarreal, who bought his rights from the MLS for $10 million.

Altidore appeared in six matches last season with Villarreal scoring one goal before he was loaned to Spanish second division squad Xeres. At Xeres, Altidore suffered from a nagging injury to his toe that eventually ended his season.

Before joining Villarreal, Altidore scored 15 goals in 27 matches with the New York Red Bulls.

This is exactly what Hull City needs to improve their squad. After a great start last year in the Premier League, Hull found themselves in a downward spiral throughout the remainder of the season.

Their main problem was not finding the back of the net. With Altidore in great form, and only being 19 years old, he should provide that goalscorer mentality to the club.

This is great news for USA soccer fans. Altidore will be playing in arguably the best league in the world with the opportunity to get a ton of minutes. Good luck Jozy!
