TERRIBLE Organization at Candlestick Park for Real Madrid vs. Club America

1:11 am in La Liga, NEWS by jeff

When the announcement came that Real Madrid was playing Club America in San Francisco’s Candlestick Park a few months ago all of us here at Livethepitch.com were stoked about seeing some of the best players in the world in our own backyard.  As we waited for weeks for this great event, the excitement was through the roof.  Until game day.

We purchased our tickets through Ticketmaster.com and were thrown off a little by the fact that we couldn’t print the tickets from home like all other Ticketmaster.com events.  We purchased three tickets through the site for a total of  $170.00.  A little expensive, even though these were the cheapest tickets available.

As we drove down the 101 from the city towards Candlestick, we quickly realized that this could be a challenge to get into the match on time.  Traffic leaving the city was bumper to bumper as it took us over an hour to get to the stadium from the Hayes Valley neighborhood.

When we finally arrived at the stadium we waited again just to get into the parking lot for a $30.00 fee.  While walking towards the stadium we were instructed by security to head to the gate A for will call. After waiting in line for a few minutes there, we overheard that the wait was over an hour and to head to gate B. (I don’t think gate A was even will call even though there were signs).

While walking around the stadium we realized there  was going to be a problem on the horizon.

As we made the turn around the stadium to get to gate B we witnessed complete pandemonium.  I would estimate around 5,000 people in numerous lines with four windows handling tickets. Police standing by looking like they were ready for a riot.  It was now past 8:00 as we found ourselves sitting in a line that was not moving.  Sitting in the same spot 10 minutes later, 20 minutes and after 30 minutes of waiting in line we bailed. At the pace we were moving, we probably would have made it to our seats just as the referee blew the final whistle.

To top it off, the parking company wouldn’t refund anyone that couldn’t get into the game. We pulled over and argued with them for a few minutes with another pissed off fan. He is an attorney and says he is going to file suit in small claims against City Park in the morning. Not sure if that will go anywhere, but I gave him an email address to contact us and will post an update if I hear anything.

We weren’t the only unhappy fans:

@drewmwilson “Real Madrid at Candlestick is a mess. Waited an hour in line only to discover credit card machines are down. Failed. Going home.”

@aaaaaalexandra Trying to get through the will call line at candlestick park… this is the most disorganized event I’ve ever been to

@gerardramos went to candlestick for realmadrid v clubamerica. stood in line at willcall with thousands then left. can’t believe I’m missing this game.

@nickmyer5 “Could get in candlestick to see real Madrid. Will call fail.”

@guitarchitekt “Who else got screwed by Ticketmaster at the Candlestick will call tonight? Truly backwards and evil company”

@Rikusl “Will call for a soccer game at Candlestick? Absolutely pathetic. Been in line for an hour with no progress.”

What was your experience like? Let us know in the comments.

Real Madrid Go Undefeated

12:02 pm in La Liga, MLS by jeff

Real Madrid finished their North American tour Sunday going 2-0 with a combined score of 8-1 against Toronto FC and DC United of the MLS.  Madrid came into this preseason with plenty of new faces on the squad.  The additions of Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka make Madrid a clear front runner in La Liga and the Champions League.

In the first match of the tour, Madrid defeated Toronto FC 5-1 in front of a sold out BMO Field.  From the opening whistle Madrid dominated every facet of the game.  Watching a match like this shows that the MLS is far, far behind everyone else.  At the half it was 3-0 Madrid, but could been 6-0.  Raul found the back of the net twice in the opening half with Ronaldo also getting a goal.

In the second half Madrid made numerous changes and still dominated play.  Benzema made the score 4-0 off a great assist from Negrado.  Toronto FC would find the back of the net when Gabe Gala pounced on a horrible rebound opportunity from Dudek.  The Toronto fans went absolutely bizerk when they finally put one in.  Arjen Robben schooled the Toronto defence  to make the final score 5-1.

The second game of Madrid’s tour saw them face off with DC United at Fedex Field.  Madrid dominated once again but could not find the back of the net in the opening 45 minutes.  DC United keeper Josh Wicks was by far the player of the match in the opening half coming up with some huge saves to keep United in the match.

The second half was a completely different story.  Madrid’s Arjen Robben took over the match.  Robben is coming off an awful season for Madrid but seeing this type of performance has to sit well with the Madrid coaching staff.  Higuain found the back of the net twice in the second half with Robben also netting a goal.  Final score 3-0 Real Madrid.

With the talent that Madrid can field  every time they take the pitch they are in for a magical season in my opinion.  Look for Madrid to give Barcelona a huge test in defending their La Liga crown.  Madrid also should be one of the favorites for the Champions league this year.  Overall, DC United played a much better match than Toronto FC.  No matter the final score, the MLS teams came out of these matches with an unforgettable experience against one of the best squads in the world.

Real Madrid Starts North American Tour Tonight

12:03 pm in La Liga, MLS by jeff

Tonight, the new and improved Real Madrid faces off against Toronto FC in a preseason match-up at 7:30 (EST).  On Sunday, Aug. 9, Madrid will take on DC United at Fedex Field at 3:30 (EST).  Real Madrid is coming off an extremely forgetful season in the Spanish La Liga.  This past off-season Madrid has signed Kaka, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Xabi Alonso to astronomical deals to bolster their attack.

The excitement all around the world is about how Ronaldo and Kaka will co-exist.  There is no question that these two are the best players in the world at the moment.  Together they should cause havoc for defenses every time they take the pitch.  Ronaldo is coming off one of the best years ever at Manchester United.  Kaka transferred from AC Milan where he had an injury plagued year, but he was still unstoppable on the field.

This is another great test for a MLS team against a world power like Real Madrid.  Throughout the summer the USA is host to some of the greatest clubs in the world as they take part in preseason friendlies.  Here at Livethepitch.com we have been lucky enough to be in attendance of the Gold Cup and the World Football Challenge.

Hopefully for years to come these world powerhouses can continue to come over and promote the growth of soccer here in the United States.
